Our Apprentice and Work Training Program

It is our desire to see the students at Future Men learn to follow instructions, develop an eye for detail, and show initiative in their work. These qualities will help them later in life to acquire and keep a job. Being physically productive and having the ability to complete a task gives a young man genuine self-esteem, as opposed to the hollow false praise that our society has been programmed to give. In many cases, actively contributing to society will help these young men “turn the corner” and once again have hope. All of the work completed by a student, whether through apprenticeship or service project, is incorporated into an elective credit. The students come to understand that the work ethic they develop here contributes to who they are and what they are becoming.

What Students and Parents Say About Us

To those parents and family that feel hopeless and afraid, that they too have lost there child to the world of drugs and all it trappings. Our son was addicted to pot. Before sending him to Future Men, we had tried many different paths to get his attention. We placed him in a treatment center, where he was observed for a week. When he finally dropped the tuff guy act, they agreed to release him to an off-sight treatment facility. He was required to go there three times a week, for group session, and he was tested once each week. He finally manage to get clean for a month, and was released. It was suggested to us that he attend a Marijuana anonymous group where he could learn to stay clean, which he refused to do. During that summer and the following school year we would go as a family once a week to seek help from a family counselor. Nothing was getting through to him, by the end of his sophomore year 2007 he was heavy into his drug of choice and being kick out of school at least once a month.

With summer on the horizon and not wanting him to be totally lost, my wife began a desperate search in hopes of rescuing our son from himself. It was during this search that she discovered Future Men. After talking to the director, Aaron Boldman, she was convinced that this would be a great place for our son, and it had all the activities that our son would like. He wouldn't be living at home, he wouldn't have to put up with Mom and Dad, it was out in the country (which he likes), he would be able to learn a trade and support himself. It was perfect but how would we get him there? With allot of worry, prayer, and wonderful support from Aaron and his staff, on June 18th 2007, we put our son on a plane, and he flew by himself from San Diego to Springfield Missouri.

We are happy to say that in the 8 months that our son attended the Future Men, he was able to complete his high school education, learn a trade, be respectful and learn how to take care of himself. The seeds for a good life have been planted into his heart. I can say that I have my son back, although we still butt heads at times, I can see the softness in his face when he gives me a hug, he can look me in the eye and tell me he loves me, just like it was before he turned to drugs.

I just wanted to let you know of the amazing transformation Christ has done in his life in the past month or so. He is a new creation! A totally new kid – more like the 10-12 year old I remember. Our family is amazed and thrilled. He wants to read the Bible with me each morning, he is helpful around the house, he looks for things to do, he doesn’t sleep in, he’s meeting with our pastor, he is returning things he stole, he is sensitive to sin (told me today that he laughed with someone at the pizza place where he works at a unkind comment about women and that that was wrong). He’s lost 70 lbs. His eyes are clear. He chooses to spend time with family only.

I could go on and on…but you get the picture. Our pastor asked the congregation this morning how were we seeing Jesus….and all I could think of is that I see Jesus every morning when I see this transformed Colin.

I thought I would need a huge level of intelligence to succeed in a higher education environment, but you told me I didn’t need a great deal of intelligence, just to study hard. I didn’t believe you and instead of finishing up 2 half credits to graduate there in Missouri I went back to Dallas for a full senior year. I realize that I am not that intelligent, but I study harder than most of my peers simply because I want my nursing license more than I want to part or anything else that would distract me. Basically I’ve put my mind to it and have gotten half way through school barely able to spell successfully…just through hard work. I didn’t believe you when you tried telling me this but I realize it now. Thank you for sharing your wisdom with me. I thought this may intrigue you. Also Future Men instilled a ridiculous work ethic in me! People look at me funny for volunteering my weekend nights in the ER and all they pay me is some carrot cake every few weeks! I completely blame you for my lack of free time!

We cannot even begin to express our deep gratitude to you and your staff for giving Adam a Christ-centered environment to grow as a young man and to put off foolishness. When we first sent Adam to Future Men, we were at the very least hoping that Adam would learn to respect his elders, and earn some credits for school as well as stopping his use of drugs and tobacco. Of course we were praying for a complete transformation and for Adam to surrender his life to Christ…but, we knew that was up to the Lord. Well as you know, God exceeded our hopes and granted our prayers. Praise His Holy Name! Thank you Aaron so very much for your role in this season of Adam’s life. He speaks highly of you. He has enjoyed your honesty and ability to be “real” when speaking to the boys.

Our son, Pete, completed the Future Men program nearly 4 years ago, with a Future Men certificate and a high school diploma. I have said many times that while Pete had a lot to learn while he was at FM, and so did I. The counsel that I received as he was graduating has wrung in my ears: ‘Don’t rescue him’. I haven’t done perfectly, but I have improved.

As I write, Pete is married (to a woman that we really like), has an 11 month old son, has a job that he enjoys, is attending technical college, and is active member of their church. Watching him grow, albeit slowly, from a foolish adolescent to a responsible, godly man, has been one of the true joys of my life”. My wife and I spent last weekend with Pete and his family and came away very encouraged.

Pete’s still full of himself, but it is amazing to watch him consistently look out for his wife and child’s welfare more than his own. One very positive part of the past four years is that Pete has consistently expressed a desire to be a part of our family. I am grateful for that, and I do not take that for granted. Recently Pete and his siblings gathered together for Thanksgiving at our daughter’s home. That’s the first time that the three of them had been together for more than 24 hours since before Future Men, my wife and I were admittedly a bit anxious for them (people with “baggage” in a two-bedroom apartment for 4 days…). As it turned out, it was a positive time of healing and restoration and moving toward healthy adult relationships. So that’s where we’ve been and where we are. We are grateful for your ministry and your involvement in our family’s life.

My time at Future Men planted many seeds in me that God watered later on. The time I spent in a structured, godly, and loving environment made a big difference in my life. I grew up without my father consistently in my life, and although I didn’t like the rules, Mr. Boldman and many other played a role in filling that void in my life for that season, which is something I will always be thankful for!

In the past 6 years I have given my life back to Christ, I quit using drugs, tobacco, alcohol, overcame an addiction to pornography, obtained my GED, even completed some college, and am currently serving in full-time ministry…all by God’s grace and to His glory. Thank you, Mr. Boldman and team for the part you played in God’s plan for my life.

At Future Men, Brendan has matured. He helps without asking. He has learned to work. The apprenticeship has improved his skills. He has learned to make friends with non-musicians. He has gained 20 pounds and looks much healthier. His depression is managed. He has been pushed to do new things, to live a higher life. Much wisdom and Biblical counsel has been sown into him and we believe a harvest is coming.

It is hard to believe that this chapter is almost over. While we will miss Future Men, we are grateful. We continue to pray God’s good work in that place. May the Lord guide you in ministering effectively to the students in your care.

Programs which specifically help teenagers in trouble are typically referred to as therapeutic boarding schools. This Christian boarding school provides Bible-centered treatment for at-risk teens, as opposed to other alternative schools. By contrast, there are military schools for boys and boot camps for troubled boys, which provide strict discipline in a highly structured environment but lack long-term effectiveness.
